PINASarap:TURON

Turon (banana fritters) is a very popular Filipino snack made of deep-fried banana cutlets wrapped in crepe wrapper. A common afternoon snack in the country, turon can be bought in the streets and in specialty stores, usually along with other sweet treats like banana-que and camote-que.

 Ingredients

  • lumpia wrapper/skins
  • saba kind of banana
  • brown sugar
  • other filling, e.g. jackfruit slivers, peanut butter, cheese (optional)
  • beaten egg or flour, to seal (optional)

Procedure

  • Cut the banana pieces lengthwise and in a size that would fit the lumpia wrapper.
  • Roll the pieces in brown sugar.
  • Lay the pieces on the lumpia wrapper. Lay a strip of jackfruit or cheese (optional) beside the banana.
  • Roll the wrapper as with lumpia or eggroll. Seal by wetting the end flap of the wrapper with a little water, beaten egg, or dissolved flour.
  • Deep fry in pre-heated cooking oil until wrapper turns golden brown.
  • Set on tissue-covered strainer to drain excess oil before serving.
